Session Archive: Tech Talk: Moodle for Middle School

On August 5th, I moderated a Tech Talk for MSP2 using Elluminate via LearnCentral.org. Over 50 people were in attendance.

Throughout the whirlwind session, we discussed some of the basics in using Moodle in the middle school classroom. Since we covered so much information, we thought that it might be valuable to those that were unable to attend or those that wanted a reference tool to post the slide show in its entirety. There are 2 links below. The first is the Elluminate presentation (with audio and extra examples) and the second is the slideshow itself via Slideshare.

Since I just painted in broad strokes, please feel free to ask any specific questions or share the cool ways in which you use Moodle in your classroom.

Thanks Tom! I did some digging on Moodle.org, and it seems like there are no current solutions, but if you find anything I'd be very interested in hearing about it.

I haven't had occassion to iCal yet. Although it sounds like it has some pretty cool uses.....I'm trying to read up on it myself in the Moodle.org forums. Hopefully we can dig up an answer.

Hi everyone. I've been messing around with my first moodle site (www.ClarkeApollo.com) and have some questions I'm hoping someone can answer:

At the bottom of the calendar in Moodle is an iCal button. This allows you to export calendar events to other programs. I have used it with Mac iCal to automatically subscribe to my class events (cool!). Here are my two questions:

1) Moodle seems to only export the upcoming 60 days of events, up to 1000 of them. I'd like to export the entire school year. Is there a way to increase this limit?

2) When the exported calendar events are displayed in Mac iCal, they show up with a time of "12:00". Is there any way to suppress the time from showing up on "all day" events? They show up just fine in Moodle, but not in exported calendars.

While books and sites are helpful, I honestly learned from just "plugging and chugging." Moodle is one of those things that you cant break and you can always make back up copies of your page prior to editing. I know that TeacherTube has some very good videos that could guide you through the process. As you proceed, please let us know if the community can help you with any issues. Take Care, Tom

I am sorry I missed the webinar. My district has had Moodle for a while but they have not done a good job in explaining it to the teachers. The only thing I know about it is how to get into it. After that, I am lost. Is there a good resource anywhere that I can go to that will show me exactly HOW to use it? I didn't find the demo site helpful. Is there a video that explains how to set up a quiz or wiki or blog in Moodle? I really want to use this resource as it is district approved, but the lack of understanding is keeping me from using it.
