Thank you for the welcome!! It's nice to hear from another upstate NYer. As a remedial teacher, I do a lot of differentiation quite "naturally" as I work with small groups of students, finding out their learning strengths and helping them use those strengths in math. In my enrichment classes my current goal is to find ways to incorporate more choice into my units. My favorite books on differentiation are by Tomlinson and by Rick Wormli. How about you?

- WOW. 198 kids in the whole school! That is small I have over 160 students myself, and those are just 7th graders.
That must be great for building a sense of community. You can know every student and watch their progress. How wonderful that must be. You can really see the impact you have on students.
We have so many students at our school that there are many that I never meet. And since they are only there for two years, the kids barely get their feet under them and we send them off to the high school. Oh well, tis the nature of industrialized education.

I am always excited to see another science person on board.
How small is your school? I know that when you are the only teacher of a subject at a school, it can seem isolating. There is no one to share preparation of materials, swap resources, bounce ideas off of, and so forth. There are plenty of other teachers, but its not quite the same as having someone in your discipline.
I hope our network here can provide you with some additional support and connections. Let us know if there is anything we can help you with.

We've got lots of resources for middle school science teachers - look at the left side of the Main page - Science Publications, Diigo lists, and two project blogs - Connecting News to the National Science Education Standards and Exemplary Resources for Middle School Math and Science. A third blog - Polar News and Resources might also be interesting to you - it's coming from another of our projects - Beyond Penguins and Polar Bears.
Right now there are three groups - Science, Math, and Integrating Technology - I would encourage you to join one or more and start a conversation. Are there any specific topics or issues you would like to see addressed?
