the network for middle school math and science teachers

Today I learned about a young lady in SC who is doing her part to stamp out hunger.  In 3rd grade, Katie's teacher gave each student a cabbage plant.  Katie nurtured hers into a 40-pound cabbage.  When she learned that many were not as fortunate as her family, she donated the cabbage to help feed the hungry.  This link is to a video about her project http://greenupgrader.com/12498/11-year-old-grows-veggies-to-feed-ho...

Katie's project has grown.  She and her friends donated 2 tons of food from the gardens they grew this last year.  Here is a link to her website.  http://katieskrops.com/

She has also partnered with Opal Apples to offer grants to kids 9 - 16 years old to help them start gardens in their communities with the goal of donating the produce to those in need.  http://katieskrops.com/opal.html

Perhaps you and your students or kids in your community might benefit from this opportunity.
